The Power of Humility in Receiving Healing

In our journey of faith, we often encounter moments that challenge our understanding of how God works. We may have preconceived notions about healing, miracles, and the way divine intervention should unfold. However, the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 offers us a lesson on the importance of humility and obedience in receiving God's blessings.

Naaman was a great warrior, highly regarded in his land. Yet, he suffered from leprosy, a condition that marked him as unclean and separated from society. When he heard of a prophet in Israel who could heal him, he set out with great expectations and abundant gifts. But the prophet's instructions were not what he anticipated.

‍

Instead of a grand gesture or elaborate ritual, Elisha simply sent a messenger to tell Naaman to wash seven times in the Jordan River. This seemingly simple request infuriated Naaman. He had expected the prophet to come out, call on his God, wave his hand over the spot, and cure him. His pride was wounded, and he stormed off in a rage.

How often do we react similarly when God's methods don't align with our expectations? We may have a specific idea of how healing should occur or how our prayers should be answered. But God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

Naaman's servants wisely reasoned with him, asking, "If the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, 'Wash and be cleansed'!" This simple question pierced through Naaman's pride and opened his heart to obedience.

In our own lives, we may be holding onto pride that prevents us from receiving God's blessings. Perhaps we think we're too educated, too spiritual, or too experienced to follow simple instructions. Maybe we're offended that God isn't working in the way we expected. Or he didn’t pick “the right person” to be the messenger. He likely picked the last person we wanted to receive from! But true faith often requires us to lay aside our preconceptions and humbly follow God's leading, even when it doesn't make sense to us.

The story reminds us that healing is not a formula. It's not about saying the right words, praying in a certain way, or having a specific person lay hands on us. Healing is a gift from God, and it often comes in unexpected ways. Sometimes, it's instantaneous; other times, it's a gradual process. Sometimes, it comes through medical intervention; other times, it defies all medical explanation.

We must remember that our faith is not in a method or a person, but in Jesus Christ, the ultimate healer. When we exalt Him, miracles happen. When we glorify Him, healing flows. Our role is to create an atmosphere of faith, to stand in agreement with one another, and to be open to however or through whomever God chooses to move.

This openness requires us to deal with our pride and any offense we may be harboring. It means letting go of our religious notions about how things should happen. It means being willing to look foolish if that's what God asks of us. Remember, Jesus often used unconventional methods in His healings – making mud with saliva, telling a man to wash in a pool, or simply speaking a word from afar.

The power of testimony plays a crucial role in building faith for healing. When we hear stories of God's miraculous interventions, it becomes a prophecy of what God can do in our own lives. Each testimony of healing becomes a seed of faith, growing in our hearts and preparing us for our own miracles.

However, we must also grapple with the reality that not every prayer for healing is answered in the way we hope. There are times when, despite our faith and prayers, loved ones are not healed on this side of eternity. These moments can shake our faith and leave us questioning God's goodness. Yet, even in these difficult times, we are called to trust in God's sovereign wisdom and to believe that He is working all things for good, even when we can't see or understand it.

In all circumstances, whether we see immediate results or not, our response should be one of gratitude. Gratitude is a powerful weapon in our spiritual arsenal. It shifts our focus from what we lack to what we have, from our problems to God's faithfulness. Even in the midst of pain or uncertainty, choosing to thank God positions our hearts to receive from Him.

As we pursue healing and miracles, let us remember that our ultimate goal is not just physical wholeness, but a deeper relationship with our Savior. Sometimes, the process of seeking healing draws us closer to God in ways we never anticipated. It teaches us to depend on Him, to trust His timing, and to value His presence more than His presents.

Let us approach God with humility, ready to follow His instructions even when they seem too simple or don't make sense to us. Let's create an atmosphere of faith in our communities, standing together in prayer and expectation. Let's share our testimonies, building each other's faith. And in all things, let's maintain an attitude of gratitude, trusting that God is working even when we can't see it.

May we always remember that our lives belong to Jesus. Everything we are and everything we have is His. He has rescued us, saved us, and paid the price for our forgiveness and healing. As we trust Him all the days of our lives, may we never back down and never change our minds about His goodness and power to heal.
